  • Chiura Obata (1885–1975) was a Japanese-American artist celebrated for his ability to unite traditional Japanese ink painting with the vast landscapes of the American West. Born in Japan and later settling in California, Obata captured scenes of Yosemite, the Sierra Nevada, and the Sacramento Valley with poetic precision. As a professor at UC Berkeley, he influenced generations of artists. Even during his internment in World War II, Obata continued to teach and create, leaving behind a legacy defined by beauty, resilience, and cultural harmony.
