The decorative paper visible at page 5 of the third edition (1828) of Narrative of a Journey through the Upper Provinces of India is an example of luxurious hand-marbled endpaper, a 19th-century artisanal craft handmade by specialist binders rather than a named artist. Using the traditional technique of floating pigments on a viscous “size” bath and manipulating them with combs or brushes into patterns like Nonpareil, Spanish wave or stone, each sheet emerges as a unique monotype—both functional and visually striking. Though individual marblers rarely signed their work, their labor reflects a heritage of refined craftsmanship and decorative quality characteristic of elite bindings in the early 19th century.
