  • Utagawa Yoshitsuya (1822–1866), also known as Ichieisai Yoshitsuya and Kōko Yoshitsuya, was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist during the late Edo period. A dedicated pupil of the renowned Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshitsuya specialized in dynamic woodblock prints depicting warriors, legendary battles, and mythological scenes. His works are celebrated for their intricate detail and vigorous compositions, often portraying samurai heroes and supernatural entities. Beyond his warrior prints, Yoshitsuya contributed to commercial art through advertisements and tattoo designs, reflecting the diverse applications of ukiyo-e art in 19th-century Japan. His legacy includes mentoring artists such as Utagawa Kazutoyo and Utagawa Yoshitoyo II, ensuring the continuation of the Utagawa school's artistic influence.
