  • Ogata Gekkō (1859–1920) was a Japanese artist and woodblock printmaker, known for his innovative approach to ukiyo-e. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he was self-taught, blending traditional Japanese techniques with modern influences. His works often depicted landscapes, historical scenes, and mythological themes, including his famous dragon motifs. Gekkō’s mastery of light, shadow, and delicate gradients gave his prints a refined, painterly quality, making him a key figure in Meiji-era Japanese art.
