Comingio Merculiano (1845–1915) was an Italian artist renowned for his detailed marine life illustrations. Born in Naples, he studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in his hometown. In 1885, Merculiano began working at the Zoological Station in Naples, where he collaborated with scientists to produce accurate and artistic depictions of marine fauna. His work enriched scientific publications, including the Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel series. Notably, his illustrations were featured in the Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, a widely circulated encyclopedia of the time. Merculiano's legacy lies in his ability to blend scientific precision with artistic expression, contributing significantly to the field of marine biology.
