  • Giovanni Battista Belzoni (1778–1823) was an Italian explorer and pioneer archaeologist renowned for his significant contributions to the study of ancient Egyptian antiquities. Born in Padua, Belzoni initially pursued a career in hydraulics and even performed as a circus strongman in London due to his imposing stature. His fascination with Egypt led him to Cairo in 1815, where he embarked on numerous archaeological endeavors. Notably, he successfully transported the colossal bust of Ramesses II, known as the "Younger Memnon," to England, and uncovered the entrance to the great temple at Abu Simbel. Belzoni also discovered and documented the tomb of Pharaoh Seti I, often referred to as "Belzoni's Tomb," and was the first to penetrate the Pyramid of Khafre at Giza. Despite lacking formal archaeological training, his adventurous spirit and remarkable discoveries have left an enduring legacy in Egyptology
