Luigi Balugani (1737–1778) was an Italian artist, draftsman, and naturalist renowned for his meticulous botanical and zoological illustrations. He accompanied James Bruce on his 18th-century expedition to Ethiopia, where he carefully documented the region’s flora, fauna, and landscapes, providing one of the earliest European visual records of East Africa’s biodiversity. Balugani’s detailed scientific illustrations were crucial in expanding European knowledge of African wildlife, though many of his works remained unpublished during his lifetime.
