  • Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a Japanese artist and a leading figure in the Shin-Hanga movement, which revitalized traditional woodblock printing in the early 20th century. Influenced by both Ukiyo-e masters and Western techniques, he brought a modern sensibility to landscapes, seasonal scenes, and atmospheric lighting. His works often depicted rural villages, temples, waterways, and snow-covered streets, blending serenity with intricate detail. Hasui’s mastery of light, shadow, and weather effects set his prints apart, creating a sense of depth and emotion. Honored as a Living National Treasure in 1956, his work continues to shape Japanese printmaking and inspire contemporary artists.
