  • Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497–1543) was a German painter, draftsman, and designer, best known for his strikingly realistic portraits and contributions to Northern Renaissance art. Born in Augsburg, Germany, he trained under his father, Hans Holbein the Elder, before moving to Basel, where he worked on religious paintings, book illustrations, and stained glass designs. His reputation grew with portraits of humanist scholars, including Desiderius Erasmus, before he traveled to England in 1526, where he became a court painter to King Henry VIII. Holbein’s work is recognized for its meticulous detail, rich color, and lifelike representation, as seen in "The Ambassadors" and his portraits of Henry VIII’s court. His ability to capture personality and status with precision made him one of the most celebrated portraitists of the 16th century, leaving an enduring impact on European portraiture and visual storytelling.
